Curious Objects: How Visual Complexity Guides Attention and Engagement

چکیده

Some things look more complex than others. For example, a crenulate and richly organized leaf may seem plain stone. What is the nature of this experience—and why do we have it in first place? Here, explore how object complexity serves as an efficiently extracted visual signal that merits further exploration. We algorithmically generated library geometric shapes determined their by computing cumulative surprisal internal skeletons—essentially quantifying “amount information” within each shape—and then used approach to ask new questions about perception complexity. Experiments 1–3 asked what kind mental process extracts complexity: slow, deliberate, reflective (as when decide expensive or popular) fast, effortless, automatic see big blue)? placed simple objects search arrays discovered were easier find among distractors are distractors—a classic asymmetry indicating prioritized processing. Next, explored function Why represent 4–5 subjects study serially presented self-paced manner (for later memory test); dwelled longer on objects—even shape was completely task-irrelevant—suggesting connection between exploratory engagement. Finally, Experiment 6 connected these implicit measures explicit judgments. Collectively, findings suggest automatically, even arouses “perceptual curiosity” encourages subsequent attentional

How evolution guides complexity.

Long-standing debates about the role of natural selection in the growth of biological complexity over geological time scales are difficult to resolve from the paleobiological record. Using an evolutionary model-a computational ecosystem subjected to natural selection-we investigate evolutionary trends in an information-theoretic measure of the complexity of the neural dynamics of artificial age...

Race Guides Attention in Visual Search.

It is known that faces are rapidly and even unconsciously categorized into social groups (black vs. white, male vs. female). Here, I test whether preferences for specific social groups guide attention, using a visual search paradigm. In Experiment 1 participants searched displays of neutral faces for an angry or frightened target face. Black target faces were detected more efficiently than whit...

How attention extracts objects from noise.

The visual system is remarkably proficient at extracting relevant object information from noisy, cluttered environments. Although attention is known to enhance sensory processing, the mechanisms by which attention extracts relevant information from noise are not well understood. According to the perceptual template model, attention may act to amplify responses to all visual input, or it may act...

How Chromaticity Guides Visual Search in Real-World Scenes

To study visual attention during search processes, numerous studies measured the selectivity of observers’ saccadic eye movements for local display features. These experiments almost entirely relied on simple, artificial displays with discrete search items and features. Recently, a first study on saccadic selectivity in real-world scenes was conducted, demonstrating visual guidance by low-level...

Curious about how cancer forms

Cancer is a complex medical issue, so kudos to you for seeking out more information. For a quick answer to your question ? cancer of any type forms due to cells growing uncontrollably and rapidly in the body. While this may not sound harmful, the rapid cell growth includes cells that have undergone genetic mutations (i.e., harmful changes to cellular DNA). The faster and more frequently the cel...
